Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers about stump grinding, pricing, depth, cleanup, utility marking, service areas, and what to expect from Andrew’s Stump Grinding.
What is stump grinding and why is it recommended?
Stump grinding is the most effective way to remove unwanted tree stumps. Using specialized equipment, the stump is ground below the surface, improving safety, curb appeal, and making your yard usable again without causing major disruption to the surrounding landscape.
Why should I hire a local stump grinding service?
Hiring a local stump grinding company means faster response times, better pricing, and knowledge of local soil and property conditions. A nearby provider also makes scheduling and follow-up easier.
What areas do you serve?
Andrew’s Stump Grinding proudly serves Lorain County, Cuyahoga County, and Erie County, Ohio, including Elyria, North Ridgeville, Amherst, Avon, Avon Lake, Vermilion, Sheffield Lake, Sheffield Village, Lorain, Oberlin, the Sandusky area, Cleveland west side suburbs, and nearby communities.
How deep is the stump ground?
Stumps are typically ground 6 to 12 inches below ground level. Our maximum grinding depth capability is up to 16 inches below grade when needed. This depth allows for grass growth, landscaping, or covering with soil or mulch.
Will stump grinding remove the entire root system?
Stump grinding removes the visible stump and surface roots near it. Larger root systems are left underground to naturally decompose over time and usually do not interfere with lawns or structures.
How long does stump grinding take?
Most stump grinding jobs take between 30 minutes and one hour per stump. Larger stumps or multiple stumps may take longer depending on size and access.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Stump grinding costs depend on stump size, number of stumps, accessibility, root spread, depth required, and location. Local stump grinding services typically offer more competitive pricing with fewer travel fees.
Do I need to be home during stump grinding service?
No. As long as we have clear access to the stump and any instructions ahead of time, you do not need to be present during the service.
What happens to the wood chips after stump grinding?
Wood chips can be left on site for mulch, spread into the hole, or removed if requested. Many homeowners reuse the chips for landscaping around trees or garden beds. Homeowners may also bag the chips for yard-waste pickup if they prefer to have them taken away.
Can I plant grass or a tree after stump grinding?
Yes. Grass can be planted once the area is filled with soil. For trees, it is best to plant nearby rather than directly on top of the ground stump area.
Is stump grinding safe for nearby property and utilities?
Yes, when handled by a professional. Before any digging or ground penetration, we coordinate utility marking through Ohio Utilities Protection Service / PUCO. In Ohio, it is required by law that underground utilities be marked at least 48 hours before digging, and that process is handled by the contractor before work begins.
Is stump grinding better than digging out a stump?
Yes. Stump grinding is faster, less invasive, and more affordable than full stump removal. It avoids large holes and helps minimize damage to your yard.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We are state licensed and fully insured, including business liability insurance and equipment insurance, so your property is protected during the stump grinding process.
